40-Hour Training → Competency Assessment → BACB® Application → RBT® Exam → Certification
Completing your 40-hour RBT® training is a major first step toward becoming a Registered Behavior Technician®.
After finishing the required training, the next major step is typically the Initial RBT® Competency Assessment, where you demonstrate that you can apply important ABA skills in practice. This assessment helps show that you understand how to use what you learned during training, not just recognize the terminology.
From there, future RBTs® can move on to the BACB® application, RBT® exam, and certification process.

Who Can Conduct an RBT® Competency Assessment in 2026?
The assessment must be overseen by a qualified BCBA® or BCaBA® responsible assessor who meets BACB® supervision requirements. A qualified assistant assessor may also conduct some or all of the assessment under the responsible assessor’s oversight.
An assistant assessor must:
Important: The BACB® requires that the responsible assessor, assistant assessor(s), and RBT® applicant “must be employed at (or all have a contractual relationship with) the same organization.” That organization must also be the entity providing services to the client involved in the assessment. This relationship requirement applies to the entire Initial Competency Assessment, not just the portions involving clients.
An assistant assessor must:
- Hold an active RBT® certification or higher
- Demonstrate proficiency in the skills being assessed
- Work under the oversight of the responsible assessor
