Offering children choices, and respecting their chosen choice, helps them feel a sense of control in their lives.

Tips for RBTs

For a child with autism, especially one with minimal language and communication skills, there is often little they can do to make their preferences known. Instead of making decisions on their own, all day long they are directed what to do by the adults around them. Here are tips, RBTs & Caregivers can use, to give a child the power of choice.

1

Seek out new opportunities to offer choices.
For example, where to conduct a therapy session (on the floor, at the kitchen table, outside), which activity to do first that day, what to eat for snack, how long to work on a particular program for.

2

It's best to begin by giving two choices using concrete items.
Use actual items, a picture, a written word when providing choices and grant them their chosen option immediately. As your learner grows their understanding of how to make a choice, you can give them a bigger array of options to choose from.

3

Allow your learner to use whichever form of communication they want to make their choice.
Accept spoken word, gesturing, pointing, etc. The focus in the beginning should be on the learner simply sharing with you their preference.

4

SUCCESS!
