Many people think they need to get hired by an ABA company first before they can become a Registered Behavior Technician®.

That is one common path, but it is not the only path.

Some companies may help new hires complete training, supervision, and certification steps. However, that usually means following the employer’s timeline, requirements, and availability.

For future RBT®s who want more freedom, structure, and support, the ATCC's Full RBT Certification Program offers a different path. Instead of waiting for an employer to sponsor your certification journey, ATCC helps guide you through the RBT® process from start to finish.

The Employer-Sponsored RBT® Route

The employer-sponsored route may work well for some people. A company may hire you first, provide training, connect you with a supervisor, and help you complete the next steps toward certification.

But this path can also come with delays or limitations, such as:

  • Waiting for the company’s training schedule
  • Completing company-specific onboarding
  • Depending on the employer for supervision or competency assessment availability
  • Feeling tied to one organization before becoming certified
  • Having less flexibility with your timeline
  • Applying for jobs before you are fully certified

This route can be helpful, but it may not be ideal for someone who wants to become RBT® certified first and apply for your first job with ultimate confidence.

Thank you!

How to Become an RBT® Without Waiting for an Employer

The ATCC Full RBT® Certification Program is designed for students who want a clear, supported, and structured certification path without waiting on an employer first.

With ATCC, students can move forward on their own timeline while receiving guidance through the major steps of the RBT® certification process, including the 40-hour training, competency assessment support, application guidance, exam preparation, and job-readiness support.

This makes the program a strong option for students who want to:

  • Become RBT® certified before applying for jobs
  • Avoid feeling locked into one employer too early
  • Move through the process with structure and support
  • Prepare for the RBT® exam with confidence
  • Apply as a stronger, more job-ready candidate
  • Have more freedom when comparing job opportunities

RBT® Certified First vs. Waiting to Be Sponsored

Becoming RBT® certified before applying does not guarantee a specific job, pay rate, schedule, or benefit package. However, many employers prefer applicants who are already certified because they may be able to begin work sooner and require less onboarding support.

A certified RBT® applicant may have a stronger position when applying for roles that offer:

  • Higher starting pay
  • Better schedule options
  • Full-time hours
  • Clinic-based positions
  • Employee benefits
  • Stable client assignments
  • Supervision opportunities toward future BCBA® certification
  • Career growth within ABA organizations

Instead of applying and saying, “I need help becoming RBT® certified,” students will be able to apply as someone who has already completed their RBT® certification steps and is ready to begin their RBT® career. This path is for an RBT® who wants to be in-demand with employers when applying.
